Schwarzenegger terminates CA outsourcing ban?

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed revamping janitorial outsourcing restrictions, during what his office said would be the first of regular weekly radio addresses.

During the address, Schwarzenegger mentioned a proposal to repeal laws that prevent schools from using private companies for janitorial, cafeteria, and other services.

The governor said the change would save schools $300 million a year.

Study: Vac bags spawn salmonella?

A recent study commissioned by cleaning product manufacturer Church & Dwight Co., Inc. found that salmonella can grow in vacuum bags as a result of infrequent changing.

Studies found salmonella bacteria in vacuum bags used in homes and offices in both rural and urban areas.

Study: Certification sells

Research done by The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), compiling results from its referral systems, shows consumers believe IICRC certification is important.

Results show the total number of phone referrals from the 800 number averaged 5,622 per month — or more than 67,000 referrals in 2004 — and online referrals totaled 14,887 per month — or about 178,600 in 2004.

Manufacturer receives Green Seal certification

Chemical provider SafeSource, Inc., Rockland, MA, received Green Seal Certification in each GS-37 category that Green Seal offers.

SafeSource’s all-purpose, window, bathroom, and neutral floor cleaners were awarded the GS-37 certification.

SCA targets commercial, industrial markets

SCA Tissue, Neenah, WI formed a national accounts group to provide sales and service support for the commercial, industrial and healthcare market segments.

David Moffatt, director of national commercial and industrial accounts, will lead the targeting, sales and maintenance of national end user accounts, and the support of key chain and marketing group distributor customers.

Senate names OSHA-oversight chairman

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions ratified Senator Johnny Isakson, R-GA, chairman of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)-oversight panel, the Employment and Workplace Safety Subcommittee.

Isakson has experience with congressional oversight of OSHA as a former member of the House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections.

SDA elects board members

Alan Jope, chief operating officer of Unilever Home and Personal Care — North America, has been elected to a one-year term as chair of The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) Board of Directors.

Members elected two-dozen other senior-level executives to serve on the Board of Directors during their annual meeting in Boca Raton, FL.

Dial president and CEO to retire

Herbert M. Baum, president and chief executive officer (CEO), Dial Corporation, Scottsdale, AZ , plans to retire from his position when the company names a successor.

The board has already established a CEO search committee.

3M names VP, chief accounting officer

3M, St. Paul, MN, named Margaret M. Smyth vice president and chief accounting officer.

Smyth, who is slated to start April 12, will be responsible for leading and managing the financial reporting efforts globally for 3M.

K-C names VP/marketing officer

Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Neenah, WI, named Kim Feil vice president and senior marketing officer responsible for accelerating innovative marketing and brand-building practices across the company’s North Atlantic organizations.

Clorox names chairman

The Clorox Company, Oakland, CA, named Gerald E. “Jerry” Johnston chairman of the board.

Johnston — who will continue in his role of chief executive officer — succeeds Robert W. Matschullat, now the board’s presiding director.

Advantage Marketing adds sales manager

Advantage Marketing Associates (AMA), a Ripon, CA-based alliance of wholesalers, named Jim Farquharson national sales manager.

Farquharson will be working on national accounts covering all of North America, and will be based in the Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN area.

AMA’s Spring Conference will be held April 2-6 at the La Quinta Resort & Club, La Quinta, CA.
