P&G enters hotel-cleaning industry

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has partnered with Coverall Cleaning Concepts in the Denver launch of what both companies hope will become a national hotel cleaning service using P&G brands commonly found in U.S. households.

P&G will provide cleaning products and Coverall will manage staffing of the outsourced cleaning services — a relatively new concept in the hospitality industry.

Chemical manufacturer acquires green supplier

Chemical manufacturer Charlotte Products, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, acquired green cleaning supplier Enviro-Solutions™, Toronto, which will remain a separate business unit.

WA mandates state green building

Washington State Governor Gary Locke signed an executive order directing all new state buildings be built to green building standards, and that those larger than 25,000 square feet be certified to a Silver Rating in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

CA seeks JanSan corporate violations

Despite Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s pledge to make the state more business-friendly, California will begin targeting businesses for corporate violations.

Department of Industrial Relations Spokeswoman Susan Gard said the department’s top priority will look for violations by companies with heavily cash-oriented operations, such as janitorial services.

O’Hare awards $27M janitorial contract

Chicago-based Scrub Inc. won a three-year, $26.6-million contract — with an option to be extended for two years — to clean two terminals at O’Hare International Airport, after Chicago officials slashed the positions of 220 custodians.

The company will provide 189 workers and 27 supervisors at O’Hare under a custodial and window-cleaning contract.

JanSan website traffic up 31 percent to record 2.45M visits

Visitor traffic for the CM Group websites (, and jumped 31 percent in 2004 over the same period last year, as user visits hit the 2.45 million mark for the year, according to a statement from the group.

Chemical manufacturer lands contract

MedAssets, a purchasing organization representing 22,000 healthcare providers, awarded SafeSource, Rockland, MA, a multi-year contract for environmentally and human safe chemicals — including its product line of cleaning and disinfectant products.

BSC lands $1.7M military contract

D & A Building Services, Inc., Altamonte Springs, FL, won a $1.65-million contract with KIRA, a private Hub Zone minority company, for janitorial and carpet cleaning for 150 buildings totaling 1.3 million square feet in services at three Jacksonville, FL military bases.

IAQ conference shuns JanSan industry

The Surgeon General’s Workshop on Healthy Indoor Environment, held in January at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, failed to address the vital role of the cleaning and maintenance industry, said environmental expert Stephen Ashkin, president, The Ashkin Group, LLC, Bloomington, IN.

Citing a lack of data supporting the importance of cleaning in maintaining a healthy indoor environment, Dr. Jonathan Samet, professor and chairman, Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins University, urged the JanSan industry to collaborate with other industries, and to provide partial funding for future research.

EPA renews biotech firm’s environmental status

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) renewed biotech firm Novozyme’s membership in the National Environmental Performance Track program. The Salem, VA, company produces microbial-based cleaning products.

G-P, Disney announce 10-year alliance

Walt-Disney Parks and Resorts and Georgia-Pacific (G-P), Atlanta, announced a 10-year strategic alliance that will feature G-P’s line of tissues and towels at Disney’s family entertainment destinations.

Chicago pledges cleanup after $100M JanSan scam

The City of Chicago’s purchasing chief has promised to clean up a city program that awards contracts to businesses owned by women and minorities in the wake of the trial of the Duff family, who was charged with defrauding the city out of $100 million through bogus janitorial contracts.

Chief Procurement Officer Eric Griggs said the program — in place for 20 years — is not a “sham”, but does need to be cleaned up now.

Chicago-based Advantage Marketing Associates, an international alliance of wholesalers, will soon name a national sales manager to work on national accounts, developing distributor support for Advantage brands, enhancing the buying group relationships across North America, and interfacing with all 16 Advantage wholesalers on a local basis.
