Nearly 80 infected by bacterial outbreak
HONEA PATH, SC — Principal Mark Robertson has said that additional cleaning crews will be brought in to deep clean Honea Path Elementary School during fall break, according to WSPA-TV.
While crews have already been routinely cleaning door handles and light switches, the cleaning over the long weekend will involve room-to-room cleaning of all surfaces, the article stated.
According to the article, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has reported that more than 80 individuals have noted symptoms tied to an outbreak of shigella at the school.
"We now know that shigella can stay, live on surfaces for quite some time ... It can stay days rather than hours, so we know cleaning is important," said Adam Myrick of the DHEC.
