Metal thieves find new source in toilets
BUFFALO, NY — East Aurora police have found that some thieves really will steal anything, according to the Buffalo News.
A relatively large number of "flush valves" have been reported stolen from public restrooms in the village and the town of Aurora, the article stated.
According to the article, the valves are plated in chrome but they're made of brass, and the thieves seem to be stealing them to sell them as scrap metal.
"Scrap metal is up in value, leading some individuals to do desperate things at desperate times," said East Aurora Detective Rick Daminski.
Maintenance crews have had to replace the complete toilet or urinal, along with the plumbing, the article noted.
