Layoffs causing concern

March 24, 2011

TEANECK, NJ — The proposed Teaneck Public School District budget calls for the outsourcing of 26 custodial positions in a cost saving measure, according to the Teaneck Patch.

Under the proposed plan, custodians on the 2:10 p.m. to midnight shift would have their jobs outsourced to a private company, tentatively saving the school district around $900,000, the article stated.

While outsourcing the custodians could lessen budget deficits, opponents argue the layoffs will make schools less safe by eliminating trusted district employees, the article noted.

"It is hard for us to imagine our custodians being replaced by random company workers, as this is how we see them. The custodians are a vital part of this school," said a letter submitted to the school board from Hawthorne School staff.

According to the article, the Teaneck teacher''s union unanimously voted to support district custodians.

"We believe that the commitment that our custodians have demonstrated in decades of service is in itself reason to maintain the integrity of their presence in our school environment," Papaleo told board members.
