The elimination of the position resulted in unintended consequences in terms of cleanliness and employee productivity, so the school board was asked to fund a half-time head custodian position for a salary increase of $14,000 a year, the story stated.
According to the story, asking a person to supervise 22 employees on a part-time basis would not work, so some board members are hoping the head custodian is hired on a full-time basis instead.
Because custodians are working diligently and are ready to take the necessary steps if the H1N1 influenza A (swine flu) virus is discovered at school sites, the
Churchill County School District would be better off with a custodian with leadership capacity, the story noted.
When it was decided not to fill the head custodian position last spring, the vacancy was covered with site principals doing many of the supervisory duties instead of focusing on student achievement, something they will once again be able to do, the story added.
