Janitors protest electronic eligibility system
OAKLAND, CA — Justice for Janitors held a protest in front of the San Jose federal building on June 20, according to The Oakland Tribune.
The protest was held in light of pending federal legislation that would require employers to verify the immigration status of employees via the Internet, the article stated.
According to the article, the bill, "Legal Workforce Act," which was introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, would mandate the use of E-Verify for employers.
Under the proposed law, Social Security numbers and immigrant identification numbers of new hires would be checked against Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases to determine work eligibility, the article noted.
