NASHVILLE – As a way of coping with an uncertain employment future, many custodians are not showing up to work in an unofficial protest, according to
WSMV-TV.
After it was discovered that outsourcing the janitorial positions would save
Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools about $5 million, tension has been ongoing between Metro schools and school janitors, the story added.
According to the article, custodians are now calling in sick and staying home with pay as retaliation.
"Can''t nobody clean Metro schools like we can," said Eddie Smith, who has worked as a custodian in Metro schools for 12 years. "[But,] we haven''t had a raise in three years and yet we are faithful workers."
The custodians'' decisions of faking sick days has caused several problems in Metro schools and, stated Smith, one school had every single janitor call out sick last week.
