Janitor versus 'superbug'
September 19, 2010
In facilities around the world, battles are waged every day with uncertain consequences.
The outcomes are life or death, health or illness, and normalcy or mourning for families of loved ones.
Furthermore, this war is now being fought in communities, where children and elderly are most at danger.
Every day, today’s cleaning staff is tasked with fighting disease and providing solutions for unsafe environments.
Most of the time, these acts go unnoticed, until there is fear of a widespread epidemic.
Referred to by some as a “superbug,” methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial infection that has the potential to cause death.
Over the past several months, we have received phone calls, read letters, and talked with various people who have been personally affected by a MRSA incident.
Several of these conversations, especially from people with JanSan experience, have centered on improper cleaning.
Arm your staff for battle
This month, we have decided to use our CM/Spotlight forum to help educate our readers about MRSA.
In this issue, you will find factual information about MRSA, ways cleaning staff can minimize a threat, and cleaning tools and products that will reduce the MRSA threat.
A JanSan veteran shares his first-hand experience with MRSA and reports common responses from end users which are no longer acceptable.
Facilities owners must realize that effective cleaning plays an integral role in helping to save human life, which is a much greater reward than saving a few bucks on cleaning costs.
This mindset simply must change.
Speaking of change
In recent years, the janitor’s role has significantly evolved due to such trends as green cleaning, cleaning for health, preventing disease, as well as public awareness and expectations.
To many, sanitary environments can be the difference between gaining and losing a customer.
The industry has responded.
In our ongoing effort to keep you abreast of the latest innovations and happenings in the JanSan industry, we have added a few more informative sections in this issue of CM/Cleaning & Maintenance Management.
In his new “e-News in-depth” column, News Editor Dev Tobin surveys recent news coverage about how a possible recession might impact the JanSan industry.
Also, industry veteran Dave Frank highlights the many benefits of cleaning certification in his new “Raising Standards” column.
