Janitor stumbles upon safe house
NEW YORK — An apartment complex janitor caused major embarrassment to the New York Police Department (NYPD) when he walked into a "top secret, anti-terrorist safe house," according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
During a routine inspection the superintendent discovered a sparsely furnished apartment that contained pictures of known terrorists and photographs of local landmarks, the article stated.
According to the article, thinking he had stumbled upon an al-Qaeda terrorist plot, Salil Sheth, called police to report his findings.
The apartment was actually a base for undercover officers investigating a terrorist cell; unaware that the NYPD was in town conducting an undercover operation, all of the materials found in the apartment were seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), creating quite the embarrassing situation when the NYPD were required to request that the FBI return its property, the article noted.
