Janitor branded the 'best person in the world'
September 8, 2009
RICHMOND, VA — The janitor at Mills Godwin High School is revered by many as the "best person in the world," according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Phuong Nguyen, who spent seven years in a Vietnamese prison camp while a lieutenant in the South Vietnamese army, makes it a point to learn each student''s name and say a kind word to everyone he sees, the story stated.
Often performing opera-style songs at school concerts and assemblies in his janitor''s uniform, Nguyen has such a profound impact on students that many of them return to Mills Goodwin High School after graduating simply to chat with him, the story noted.
Nguyen said: "I live in America; I''m happy. Everyone treats me so well. That''s why I smile. I love this school."
Eager to make his American dream work despite being separated from much of his family, Nguyen works two jobs: Mills Goodwin High School janitor by day; and friendly fast-food restaurant employee by night, the story added.
According to the story, though he lacks a certificate, Nguyen, through his hardwork and compassion, is truly a teacher.
