Hyatt workers strike

July 25, 2011

CHICAGO — After nearly two years of failed negotiations, housekeepers for Hyatt Hotels went on strike last week, according to NBC Chicago.

The strike was in protest of the existing labor conditions for housekeeping staff, and coincided with nine other cities, the article stated.

According to the article, Hyatt Hotels Corporation is calling the strike, spearheaded by the labor union representing the housekeepers, UNITE HERE, "more of the same" and claimed it "continues to put its energies toward unproductive street theatrics in the name of ''solidarity.''"

UNITE HERE claims the Hyatt Corporation is to blame, citing abuse of housekeepers and the practice of replacing long-term employees with workers from temporary agencies at far lower rates of pay, the article noted.
