Hyatt workers on strike

September 9, 2011

CHICAGO — Unionized Hyatt hotel workers in Chicago and three other cities have launched a weeklong strike in an attempt to turn up the heat in a contract battle that has dragged on for more than two years, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Members of UNITE HERE began picketing at the Hyatt Regency Chicago and the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Thursday morning; they were joined by workers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu, the article stated.

According to the article, since its contract with Hyatt Hotels Corporation expired in August 2009, UNITE HERE has staged a series of one-day demonstrations protesting the company''s outsourcing practices and what workers claim are abusive working conditions.

Hyatt, however, is accusing the union of stonewalling, the article noted.

"The only reason the union has taken to the streets instead of staying at the bargaining table and securing raises for our hardworking associates here is that they are focused on organizing non-union hotels in other markets. This apparently is just union politics at its worst," said a spokeswoman for Hyatt.
