Hotel housekeepers walk out in protest
August 6, 2010
MORGANTON, SC — Fed up with what they called unfair treatment, all the housekeepers at a local motel walked off their job Wednesday morning, according to The News Herald.
By the afternoon, their demands had been heard and resolved, and no one left without a job, the article noted.
The 12 housekeepers at the Quality Inn said stipulations placed on them during a staff meeting Wednesday morning were the last the straw: Executive Housekeeper Kay Tilley said the general manager, on behalf of owners Amy and Bobby Patel, told the housekeepers they would only have 20 minutes to clean a room or else they would be fired, the article stated.
According to the article, other concerns included the avoidance of overtime pay, the lack of breaks and no vacation time.
