High school confirms MRSA case

January 11, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — A high school in Valencia County is dealing with the spread of potentially dangerous bacteria, according to KOAT-TV.

Students at Belen High School have already become sick due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and officials are now admitting they should have done more to warn parents of the dangers, the article stated.

According to the article, since last week, the school’s wrestling and weight rooms have been disinfected more than 40 times.

"It''s been cleaned and cleaned and cleaned and cleaned," said Belen Athletic Coordinator Rodney Wright.

Wright confirmed the facilities will be cleaned even more after one student reported a confirmed case of the drug-resistant disease last week, the article noted.

Belen High School has kept their teams out of several recent competitions to minimize the risk of possibly spreading MRSA to other schools, the article added.
