Head custodians to be outsourced
ROXBURY, NJ — Seven head custodians in the Roxbury Township School District are losing their jobs to a private contractor, according to the Roxbury Register.
At a May 22 board meeting, custodians and community supporters expressed their dislike over the proposal to replace several head custodians with employees from ARAMARK, a private contractor, the article stated.
According to the article, the board ultimately voted in favor of outsourcing, with a 6-2 vote.
"Last year the board advised 27 custodians in February that their contract would expire June 30, 2011," said Interim Superintendent James O''Neill.
"By notifying them in February, the district met a contractual obligation to advise them 120 days prior to doing the outsourcing. The board decided, at that time, to keep a lead custodian in each of the seven buildings. This year the board decided to have ARAMARK take over the seven lead positions as well effective immediately," O’Neill added.
Several custodians argued against the move saying that there is a lack of communication with ARAMARK, and that the handling of employees by the private firm has been "poor," the article noted.
