GREENGUARD Children and Schools certified products

September 19, 2010
The GREENGUARD Children and SchoolsSM standard requires products to satisfy strict emission limits on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, phthalates and respirable particles. Products are tested in specialized environmental chambers and their emissions released into the air are measured and compared against stringent health-based standards from the state of California’s Air Resources Board (CARB), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and other public health authorities.

Certified products carry the GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certified mark, and undergo periodic verification processes to remain certified. GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification provides assurance, from an independent third-party, that products have been tested to identify potentially harmful chemical emissions, and that the levels are within allowable limits selected by GREENGUARD from existing recognized third-party standards and guidelines.

The GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification mark can be found on more than 110,000 products produced by over 100 manufacturers. By using products bearing the GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certified mark, maintenance managers, cleaning staff and building occupants can be assured that these products have been independently verified to meet some of the most rigorous chemical emission standards in the world. A list of all GREENGUARD certified products can be found online at http://www.greenguard.org/Default.aspx?tabid=135.

The GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification program is overseen by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI), a non-profit American National Standards Institute (ANSI) authorized standards developer. It is a voluntary program open to all manufacturers. Certified products are recognized and specified by some of the nation’s leading organizations focused on sustainability such as the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED? program.
