Green roof workers go on strike
June 11, 2009
MINNEAPOLIS — Workers installing a green roof on the Target Center began a strike this morning over working conditions, pay and their right to unionize, according to the Star Tribune.
The two dozen individuals are employees of Stock Roofing Company, a subsidiary of Tecta America Corporation, and carried signs that said "On strike, unfair labor practices," the story stated.
According to the story, since April, several workers have alleged that Stock Roofing has had them work in the dark without safety equipment and has shorted them up to $20 pay per hour on the city-funded project.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has since visited the site and deemed it safe, citing no safety violations, the story noted.
The Roofers and Waterproofers Local 96 is supporting the striking employees and hopes to absorb the unsatisfied workers into their union, the story added.
