As students across the country prepare to head back to class, GE Lighting celebrates several schools that are redefining the educational learning space with lighting. GE recently recognized the below institutions for outstanding lighting projects that create a special ambience and save energy at the same time. University of Oregon, John E. Jaqua Academic Learning Center
The university''s John E. Jaqua Academic Learning Center for Student Athletes stands out as a beacon of modern contemporary architecture. With flexible networked lighting controls and detailed programming, the school''s lighting system operates at 25 to 50 percent below Oregon''s energy code. Among the stand-out lighting features is an active and vibrant three-story atrium where colorful LED and fluorescent systems provide visual interest and energy savings.
Peddie School, Ian Graham Athletic Center
This private boarding and day school in Hightstown, NJ, features a new athletic center that provides upgraded facilities for its sports teams and acts as a gathering place for students. The centerpiece is the natatorium, where a light pipe system with metal halide lamps provides uniform, glare-free illumination of 50 foot-candles on the pool surface.
Miami University, Farmer Business School
The Miami University Farmer Business School has a lighting power density 20 percent below energy codes, contributing to the building''s LEED® Silver rating while enhancing its architecture. The lighting design marries decorative lighting fixtures with high-performance light sources. Modified and custom bowl-type fixtures containing GE compact fluorescent lamps, and compact fluorescent sconces, table lamps and chandeliers represent additional decorative and energy elements.
Hackley School, Goodhue Memorial Hall
After a devastating fire at this NY-based, independent K-12 day and boarding school, the restoration of the 1903 Neoclassical academic structure provided the opportunity to create an environmentally sustainable building with LEED® Gold certification. Daylight harvesting, efficient electric lighting and lighting control strategies contribute to the hall''s overall sustainability.
