From janitor to draft pick

May 3, 2011

NASHVILLE — Tommie Campbell''s dreams for a professional football career were all but over when he became the 251st draft pick on Saturday, according to The Tennessean.

After being kicked out of two colleges for poor academics, Campbell wasn''t a chance any other National Football League (NFL) team wanted to take, the article stated.

According to the article, Campbell, a father in his early twenties, became a full-time janitor at Pittsburgh International Airport from 2008-2009.

Campbell was given another chance playing for the Vulcans at the California University of Pennsylvania, a Division II school, where he thrived despite the questions looming over his head, the article noted.

"I was very worried about that. I knew going in after the season was over that there would be questions about my character. I wasn''t a bad person. I just didn''t take care of my off-the-field responsibilities of being a student-athlete," said Campbell.

Campbell''s life could come full circle on October 9 when the Tennessee Titans are scheduled to play in Pittsburgh, taking a walk-through the airport he used to clean, the article added.
