June 1, 2011

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — The Broward County School District has been paying a former custodian to teach cleaning techniques to current custodial staff members, according to the Sun Sentinel.

For the past five years, Richard Hedland III has earned more than 99 percent of the county''s teaching staff, despite not having a college degree or state teaching certificate, the article stated.

According to the article, Hedland instructs fellow custodians on the finer points of mopping and scrubbing bathrooms, stripping and waxing floors and other techniques to help "maintain the cleanliness, orderliness, appearance and safe condition of schools."

Hedland was the district''s head custodian before being approved for the teaching position in 2006, the article noted.
