GRAPEVINE, TX — The Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District will eliminate more than 30 custodial positions by hiring a private company to clean elementary schools at night, according to the Star-Telegram.
The number of janitors to lose their jobs was lowered through attrition, but the privatization of janitorial services is part of a larger effort to reduce the district’s payroll by 51 jobs for the 2012-2013 school year, the article stated.
According to the article, in April, the school trustees approved a contract with GCA K12 Educational Services to provide workers to clean the elementary schools.
If this contract is approved, the district would see a savings of nearly $200,000, the article noted.
The contractor does not have to hire current Grapevine-Colleyville employees, but GCA has conducted interviews with custodians affected by the layoffs, the article added.
