Displaced Geico custodians stage protests
September 4, 2009
CHEVY CHASE, MD — Protests were held yesterday at the headquarters of the Berkshire Hathaway Inc. subsidiary Geico Insurance Company Inc. in response to the firing of 12 union custodians, according to the Washington Business Journal.
Earlier this week, Geico ended its contract with Cleaners of America and replaced them with Sympora Construction, which retained only five of the 17 workers, the story stated.
During the lunch hour yesterday, protesters held signs urging drivers to boycott Geico; demonstrators made a second installment of the protest during rush hour, the story noted.
The recently laid-off workers are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32 BJ, the story added.
According to the story, elected officials from Montgomery County are considering joining the ongoing boycott effort.
