Disney hotel workers plan hunger strike
According to the story, the union will make its announcement of the hunger strike today and the demonstration will take place in front of the Disney Grand Californian Hotel beginning Tuesday.
Suzi Brown, a spokesperson for Disney Resort, called the move a tactic to distract from the lack of contract for hotel workers, saying: "This calls into question their commitment to meeting with an independent federal mediator in the hopes of making progress on our negotiations. It also concerns us that they would jeopardize the health and safety of their members in this manner."
Ten people are planning to participate in the hunger strike, including seven Disney employees (using vacation days or taking unpaid time off), the adult son of an employee and two union representatives, the story stated.
The main dispute is over healthcare; Disney is offering a healthcare plan that require employee payments but employees desire the union plan which has no employee contributions, the story noted.
Union spokesperson Leigh Shelton did not say how long the strike would last, the story added.
