Custodians with criminal histories get layoff notices

November 24, 2010
WICHITA, KS — Eight custodians will be out of a job at the end of the year because of their criminal background, according to KSCW-TV.
Many have worked at city hall for years but their felonies outweigh seniority, the article noted.
"I was right in their office cleaning everything, I didn''t take anything then why would I do it now to jeopardize my job," said Bryant Franklin.
But Franklin''s work ethic for the last eight years didn''t come into play when the city considered layoffs to help balance the budget, the article stated.
According to the article, the city human resource director Sarah Gilbert says it''s not about trust but about the city only being able to afford to keep custodians that can access every floor of city hall.
