Custodians refuse to perform lawn maintenance

GREENSBURG, LA — St. Helena Parish Central Elementary School custodians are refusing requests from superiors to mow the lawn at the school, according to WBRZ-TV.

Although the custodians were shown written job descriptions that include lawn maintenance, they refuse to cut the grass because they claim they never had to do so before, the story stated.

According to the story, after being told they were to cut the grass, the janitors said they would seek union representation from the Louisiana Association of Educators.

Because there is no money left in the St. Helena Parish School Board budget for lawn maintenance, Superintendent Daisy Slan has asked the St. Helena Parish Sheriff''s Office to allow inmates to mow the lawn through the end of the school year, the story noted.

State law prevents school systems from firing tenured employees unless proof of job failure is provided, something prompting a revision of custodial job descriptions to make lawn maintenance a required task, the story added.
