Custodians integral to schools

March 20, 2012

FORT LEE, NJ — While the Fort Lee School District might only boast 18 custodians, down from nearly 50 in its heyday, those that remain are still an intricate part of the education process, according to the Fort Lee Patch.

Joe Cappellini, a custodian at Lewis F. Cole Middle School, explains that the duties of a custodian go beyond routine cleaning and maintenance, the article stated.

"We make sure doors are locked; that''s keeping the kids safe," said Cappellini.

"We walk around and make sure the building''s safe. I''ll walk outside and make sure there are no strangers around. And, if I do see a stranger, I''ll ask. I try to help as best as I can," Cappellini added.

According to the article, even after the district had to cut positions for budgetary reasons, Cappellini and his crew continue to go above and beyond what might typically be expected of them, and expresses that everyone knows the crew does their best with fewer people.

"People are lenient with us. They know we''re cut back on staff. They don''t throw a million things at us. But, when somebody asks me to do something, I do it. It''s my job. I''m just grateful I do have a job," Cappellini noted.
