Custodian's contributions remembered

October 24, 2011

KINGSTON, RI — The students, faculty and staff of the University of Rhode Island (URI) are mourning the death of one of their own, according to The Good 5 Cent Cigar.

Cynthia Spencer, 53, first came to URI in 2003, working for Dining Services before moving to the Department of Housing and Residential Life in 2007, the article stated.

"She was a real pleasure to have," said Manager of Dining Tom Cronin.

"She worked really hard. We enjoyed having her. She was a hard worker and everyone really liked her," Cronin added.

According to the article, after making the move to join the custodial staff, Spencer made an impression as someone who would always go above and beyond the call of duty.

"As part of the house staff, we want custodial workers to interact with the students; they''re one of the people that students can go to if they ever need anything. Cynthia exemplified that," said Associate Director of the Department of Housing Jeff Plouffe.

Spencer''s impact on the student body was evident by the number of students who attended her funeral service, held last Monday night, the article noted.
