Custodian offers her two cents

May 3, 2010
NEW HAVEN, CTCustodian Florence Caldwell showed up at last week''s meeting of the New Haven Public Schools Board of Education with two words of warning to officials: "Remember ARAMARK," according to the New Haven Independent.
Caldwell addressed school officials, who are considering privatizing custodial services, citing previous privatization of school food service and facilities management that sent contracts to the ARAMARK Corporation, which lead to complaints about poor performance and the eventual dismissal of ARAMARK, the story stated.
The custodian arrived at the meeting with a dozen of her fellow American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 4 Local 287 union members and was told by New Haven Public Schools Board of Education Chief Operating Officer Will Clark that the ARAMARK comparison was not valid, the story noted.
According to the story, since June 30, 2009, the custodians have worked without a contract and the district has sent out a request for proposals seeking bids on a custodial services contract for the schools.
Rafael Crespo, union member and head custodian at Edgewood Magnet School, said: "They been trying to make us look wrong. I have 10 kids. I need my job like everyone else does."
Others cited that privatization did not work before and the previous switch to ARAMARK was "a costly failure for the taxpayers," the story added.
