Custodian celebrates citizenship
GREEN BAY, WI — After a very long process, Jorge Ruiz finally took his final steps toward becoming an American citizen, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Ruiz is originally from Brazil and has been living in the U.S. for the past 12 and has been working towards citizenship for 10 of those years, the article stated.
According to the article, students and teachers from Danz Elementary School, where Ruiz is a custodian, celebrated his efforts with a party last Friday.
"It''s a long, frustrating process. Just waiting. I mean you''ve got to submit your application and pay a lot of money all the time. I’m glad it''s all done and taken care of. So now, I''m a citizen for good," said Ruiz.
Principal Gina Cornu said that Ruiz becoming a U.S. citizen is a special time for the school because it reflects the efforts of other families in the area that are trying to accomplish the same goal, the article noted.
As a new citizen, Ruiz plans to acquire a U.S. passport so that he can visit family in Brazil, the article added.
