Custodial jobs officially cut
BREWER, ME — Custodians, teachers, staff and residents spoke out against the outsourcing of six custodial positions, but too late, according to the Bangor Daily News.
The cleaning contract, awarded to ServiceMaster, will eliminate six of the school department''s 12 custodians and will save around $100,000 annually, the article noted.
"These kids know our names and see us every day," said Jeff Weeks, Brewer High School''s custodial staff supervisor and union vice president.
"Are the ServiceMaster janitors going to unjam their lockers, help them find their coats," Weeks asked.
According to the article, the most upsetting point was the fact that Brewer support staff union members first heard about the proposal on March 21, at which time they were told it was already a done deal.
