Compass will retain health contracts

January 6, 2012

VANCOUVER, BC — Compass Group Canada will maintain its monopoly over housekeeping and food services at Vancouver Island health facilities, even after the health authority attempted to get out of the contract, according to the Times Colonist.

Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) renewed the housekeeping contract held by Crothall Services Canada, valued at $10.61 million, the article stated.

According to the article, the five-year contract covers housekeeping services for Victoria General, Nanaimo and Cowichan District hospitals and at Cairnsmore Place and Dufferin Place residential care facilities.

Many view the contract renewal as the VIHA rewarding bad behavior, the article noted.

"There have been some dreadful outbreaks, including C. difficile and others, at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and now the company that was responsible for cleaning is essentially getting rewarded with another contract. I find it astonishing, just astonishing," said Nanaimo NDP MLA Leonard Krog.
