College president fined for failing to maintain fire alarms

David Swinton, who failed to attend the court hearing and instead was represented by his attorney, was fined $722.50, which Judge Dana Turner waived and ordered Swinton to only pay $200 in court costs, the story stated.
According to the story, the Columbia Fire Department''s Fire Prevention Bureau charged Benedict College after it was discovered the college did not conduct an annual test of its fire alarms and sprinkler system inside the Gressette Building and the Mini Dorm.
This incident is the latest involving non-compliance at Benedict College, where millions of dollars have been spent in an effort to become compliant with the city of Columbia''s fire code laws following more than 500 fire code violations over the past year and a half, the story noted.
Benedict College is scheduled for a full inspection by the Columbia Fire Department in October to ensure the accuracy of compliancy efforts and the safety of building occupants, the story added.
