Capitol dome to be cleaned
TACOMA, WA — Eight years of dirt and mold is scheduled to be cleaned off the dome of the Capitol building next week, according to The News Tribune.
The project will also include scrubbing the limestone of the Legislative building, as well as repairs to eroded mortar that has been allowing water to leak into the building, the article stated.
According to the article, the historic Capitol is 287 feet tall, which makes it the fourth-tallest masonry dome in the world after three cathedrals in Europe.
Over the years, leaks have been detected in the building, and delayed cleanings may have harmed the stonework, the article noted.
The dome used to be scrubbed on a five-year schedule, but the work was put on hold in 2009 when the economy and state revenues plummeted, the article added.
