ALTON, IL — Teachers, students and staff from the Mark Twain School came together to pay homage to 23-year custodian Craig Hatten for his years of unselfish service, according to The Alton Telegraph.
Hatten, who cleaned and maintained the school from 1984 until it closed in 2007, was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and recently hospitalized for complications with kidney renal-cell carcinoma, the story stated.
A group of about 20 met at the School House Grill and shared tears and fond memories of Hatten while enjoying lunch and cake, the story noted.
Former secretary Rose Marie Bushnell said: "The small things that he did. I just can''t say enough about Craig. He did a lot of things nobody knows about. Every time it snowed, my car was clean."
Former first-grade teacher Sandra Jacobs organized the event along with fellow former staff members Nancy Trask and Janie Schulmeister, the story added.
