Asbestos: A forgotten environmental issue

October 17, 2011

ROCKVILLE, MD — The Restoration Industry Association (RIA) will hold an educational webinar on asbestos on November 16, 2011, according to a press release.

By now, everyone is familiar with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead requirements, but many are less familiar with asbestos issues, the release stated.

According to the release, sometimes considered a forgotten environmental issue, asbestos is a substance not to be taken lightly, and although building codes have nearly eliminated this hazardous material, it''s still "out there" and restoration/renovation contractors need to be aware of its potential health and other hazards.

This workshop is geared to help restoration contractors in dealing with asbestos issues when performing mitigation and restoration in older buildings, the release noted.

Presenter Tom Peter from the RIA Environmental Council will discuss:

• Background of asbestos and when it contains other materials
• Assessment, inspection and testing
• Asbestos abatement
• Employee training and education
• Review of regulatory requirements
• Liability.
