Achieving Success — What's Holding You Back?
Here''s what works for most people who are successful.
It is no big secret unless, of course, you aren''t aware of the process.
1. The right attitude
You must have a positive attitude about your work and life.
It''s not what happens to you but, rather, how you deal with what happens to you each day.
You can''t let the little things get you down; look for the silver lining in the challenges you face and let the clouds pass over you.
Remember that the sun will rise tomorrow and it will be a new day.
We talk a lot about the importance of a neat and clean environment — and the same applies to a professional person.
A neat and clean appearance — clean clothes, shined shoes, clipped fingernails and kempt hair — all contribute to your success.
Others want to deal with what looks and sound like success to them.
3. Ambition and goals
Here is where most people fail: “No plans equals no action.”
Life without specific goals is like trying to get across town in a new city without a map or a global positioning satellite (GPS).
You need to have worthwhile and specific goals in mind, something you are trying to accomplish, or it will be next to impossible for you to get there because you haven''t decided where you are going.
Set a specific and definite goal, as knowing what you want to achieve is the first and most important step in reaching any worthwhile goal.
4. Sincere desire
Make a definite decision and commitment to achieving your goals.
You must have a strong and intense want or desire for what you set as your goal.
In fact, you must be willing to sacrifice and give up other things to get what want.
Nothing is free; everything has a cost one way or another.
You must know in your mind that you can and will accomplish your goals.
You don''t need to know how, but you must know that you can figure out the how.
This is far more important than knowing the exact details of how you will reach any goal.
6. Persistence and patience
To achieve your goal, you must have the persistence and patience to keep at it even when the going gets tough.
The power of positive thinking is great if you use it.
Be prepared to fail again and again if that is what it takes; don''t stop or take no for an answer.
See each challenge or setback as one step closer to the success you seek.
Detailed and organized plans to guide you in reaching your goals are a must.
Even weak, impractical or poor plans are better than none.
The best plans are detailed by the day, week, month and year.
They should be firm, written and reviewed at least twice per month.
8. Specialized knowledge
If you lack sufficient knowledge or skills, acquire them through education, experience or by consulting experts on the subject.
Keep a closed mouth but open eyes and ears and learn all you can about every job or position you have.
Try to learn as much as possible from as many as possible to improve yourself and your performance.
9. Action reaction
It''s a law of physics: If you create action, there will be a reaction.
You are the only one who can make it happen and the only one who can keep it from happening.
10. The eye sees what the mind looks for
If you don''t plant the seeds of success in your mind, you will never reap the harvest of success.
You''ll be surprised how quickly you will see a positive reaction to the effort you put forth.
