Greetings From The Future
Living in the future can be quite a challenge.
Though it is (most likely) March as you read this, the Cleaning & Maintenance Management issue planning process has already moved into early summer.
Sure, temperatures are currently low and recent snowfall has been plentiful, but our team has now turned its attention to June.
Before we blast off into (hopefully) sunny skies and warmer temperatures, please allow me to backpedal a bit.
Sizing Up The Survey
In last month’s issue, we ran the results of our In-house/Facility Manager Benchmarking Survey; the full survey results are available to registered users of CMMOnline.com at www.CMMOnline.com/In-House-Survey.
This survey was updated and brought back to the market for 2014, and again, thank you to the in-house and facility managers that took time to participate.
This was an important project for us because we feel reader surveys are extremely valuable for a couple of reasons.
First, for facility managers and other cleaning professionals, the answers reveal a number of interesting facts about the industry.
A few examples include:
- The truth about operating budgets
- Industry outsourcing trends
- Average starting wages
- Training availability
- Hiring processes.
The survey provides answers to questions that many facility managers wonder about but are seldom able to ask.
While some of your cleaning peers may be hesitant to answer direct questions, this overview of the market reveals information that facility managers can frequently call upon and refer to in their own operation.
Next, the answers help Cleaning & Maintenance Management refocus our industry-leading editorial coverage.
Studying the responses provided our team a number of new ideas and validated much of the editorial that is currently planned for 2014.
Again, full results can be downloaded at the previous link, and building service contractors (BSCs) should keep an eye out for the updated BSC Benchmarking Survey in April.
Speaking of summer and the future, it is a safe bet that many facility managers and BSCs in North America are wishing it was June or July right now.
It has been a strange, wild and challenging winter.
Closed offices, stranded workers, icy roads, snow-packed parking lots and sidewalks — each winter storm seems to bring a new set of facility challenges.
Further, as we have reported in CM e-News Daily, there have been frequent norovirus outbreaks around the U.S.
Norovirus flare ups in schools and hotels and on cruise ships have led to further facility closures and cancellations.
Yet with each new season come new challenges, and this issue of Cleaning & Maintenance Management stands ready to help.
With an emphasis on sustainability, articles cover floor matting, color coding, recycling programs and chemical usage.
Further features explore restroom disinfection, high-end building offerings and outside contracting services.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions, issues or ideas.
Thank you for reading, and happy springtime to all.
