Janitor promoted to principal
PHILADELPHIA — A longtime janitor is making his move from the janitor's closet to the principal's office, according to WTXF-TV.
On Friday, Port Barre Elementary’s longtime janitor, Joseph "Gabe" Sonnier, was named the school's next principal by the Saint Landry School Board, the article stated.
According to the article, Sonnier had been a janitor at the elementary school for 27 years, but always continued his education, earning a bachelor and master's degree along the way.
"I would come to work at like five in the morning and leave for seven and go to school all day and then come back and finish up my eight hours of work here, and go home and do homework," Sonnier said.
Sonnier has classroom experience, having previously taught third grade, the article noted.
"I taught for three years, third grade for three years, and then I went to get my bachelor's. I did it through Arkansas State University," Sonnier added.
