Discrimination lawsuit settled

June 11, 2013

ROANOKE, VA — A black janitor who levied accusations of discrimination against his supervisors has settled the lawsuit for undisclosed terms, according to The Roanoke Times.

Some of Vernell Coles' allegations survived Carilion Clinic's initial legal challenge and the "parties were in pre-trial discovery when they announced a settlement June 6 in U.S. District Court in Roanoke," the article stated.

According to the article, Coles allegedly experienced a "racially hostile and offensive work environment during his 15 years of employment at the health system."

Coles claims that he was "denied promotions, ordered to perform degrading work assignments, called a racial slur and a drug dealer and was subjected to the display of shackles and a noose in the workplace," the article noted.
