Janitor chronicles three-decade rise
SAN DIEGO, CA — In his office, Julio Ortiz keeps a faded black and white photo of himself working as a janitor at the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus yard, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Ortiz is now celebrating his 30th anniversary with MTS, and uses the photo of himself as motivation for young mechanics to aim high, the article stated.
According to the article, five years ago Ortiz was promoted to director of bus maintenance, after a steady rise which started with him cleaning the buses.
"When I first started here, I always told people: 'I'm going to be the top maintenance man,'" said Ortiz, 51, a Barrio Logan native.
"They said: 'You'll never get there,' It was motivating to me," Ortiz added.
