Housekeeper retires from UNC
CHAPEL HILL, NC — Odessa Davis, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) housekeeper for the past 17 years, is retiring, according to the Daily Tar Heel.
Davis has been a vocal and ardent supporter of her fellow housekeepers in an ongoing effort to try and reform the housekeeping department at the university, the article stated.
"I'm leaving because so much is going on in housekeeping now. I would have liked to stay for two more years, but I think it's time to go," said Davis.
According to the article, colleagues of Davis maintain that she was more than just a housekeeper to the university community; she was also a leader and a friend.
In 2010, Davis was suspended for a week without pay for sitting down during an unauthorized break; she now considers the new "sit down policy" her most significant accomplishment, the article noted.
