SAN DIEGO, CA — The day before wounded Army National Guard Sgt. Ivan Garcia received a Purple Heart, his civilian colleagues at WAXIE Sanitary Supply expressed their relief that he was home safe from Afghanistan, according to a press release.
Garcia was the only one to survive a suicide bombing attack October 29, 2011, on the armored "rhino" bus that carried himself, his best friend Sgt. Carlo F. Eugenio and 13 military and civilian passengers, the release stated.
According to the release, during his time at WAXIE, he was called up by the National Guard three times — twice to Iraq, and most recently to Afghanistan.
Jeff Roberts, WAXIE's president and chief operating officer (COO), recalled how Garcia’s fellow employees rallied around his family during his three deployments, taking the children to favorite restaurants like Red Robin and making certain to include them in various company picnics and family get-togethers, the release noted.
