High-performance Cleaning And Disinfecting Without Chemicals
Following an evaluation of their proprietary dry steam vapor system, IEHA gives Advanced Vapor Technologies a thumbs-up.
The Thermal Accelerated Nano Crystal Sanitation (TANCS®) dry steam vapor system from Advanced Vapor Technologies (AVT) earned IEHA’s “High Performance Cleaning Product for Microbial Reduction” designation following an assessment under its High Performance Cleaning Product (HPCP) testing program.
The HPCP program tests, verifies and helps promote hard surface cleaning products with green attributes to help foster the awareness and availability of those that most effectively clean an array of surfaces throughout a range of environments.
As found in the testing, microbial kill times for AVT’s proprietary dry steam vapor system, which uses only tap water to produce treated steam, are in the seconds — as opposed to the minutes of dwell time required for many chemical disinfectants.
More recently, IEHA and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell’s Toxics Use Reduction Institute (UML-TURI) agreed to embark upon a project where germ-kill testing of greener technologies would be performed, and TANCS was the first technology evaluated.
“AVT offers a unique steam vapor sanitation device that is better supported by credible testing for microbial reduction — including peer-reviewed studies — than many other products in its category,” says Beth Risinger, executive director of IEHA. “Additional microbiology testing through UML-TURI yielded similar stellar results, and we believe they are well-deserving of this honor.”
Preparing For New Compliance Mandates
Under the new, stricter hazard or “right to understand” rules being outlined by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), chemical safety training programs must be in place by December 1, 2013, which could be an onerous task for many organizations given the number of cleaning chemicals they stock and they volume in which they are used.
According to Dr. David Mudarri, former senior scientist of indoor air quality for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the heightened awareness of chemical safety issues urged by OSHA and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) should prompt a look at alternatives to toxic cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting methods and the related training requirements.
OSHA states that GHS stresses, amongst other things, the importance of training all end users, their supervisors and any other staffs who use cleaning chemicals to reference product labels and check material safety data sheet (MSDS) information so they can respond appropriately to chemical hazards.
“Given the advent of GHS, the new regulatory and safety climate and the well-known hazards of chemicals used in the workplace, it is vital that cleaning and facilities maintenance professionals consider modalities such as the TANCS steam vapor system for cleaning and sanitizing surfaces,” notes Mudarri. “The TANCS system, based on the data I have reviewed, is a viable replacement for common chemical-laden cleaners and disinfectants in several applications. And, it does not bear the burden of training compliance under GHS because it is both chemical-free and non-toxic.”
