SIOUX FALLS, SD — A Stanley County School District custodian claims he was fired for drawing attention to what he deems disrespect for the American flag, according to the Argus Leader.
Custodian Cesar Zakahi posted pictures of a crumpled flag on Facebook on Saturday, asking people to call and e-mail the district superintendent to tell him that the flag should be properly folded and stored, the article stated.
According to the article, Zakahi, an Air Force veteran, claims a coworker would crumple up the American and South Dakota flags and put them on a boiler after taking them down from an outside pole.
"First time she did it, I told her, 'That's disrespectful. You can't do it that way,' and I showed her how to fold the flag, but she continued doing it," Zakahi said.
On Monday, Zakahi the superintendent called him and said Zakahi overstepped his boundaries, the article noted.
