OSAKA, JAPAN — A hospital in the city of Daito, Osaka Prefecture, has been identified as the epicenter of a norovirus outbreak that has claimed the lives of two patients, according to The Japan Daily Press.
The outbreak began on November 27, and 48 people, consisting of patients and staff, have contracted the virus; the two patients who died were an 88-year-old woman and a 76-year-old male, both of whom succumbed to organ failure, the article stated.
According to the article, the elderly can be susceptible to dehydration, which can aggravate existing conditions.
Japanese authorities are still trying to pinpoint the source of the virus and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases has issued a warning of a possible epidemic, the article noted.
