Janitor's secret life ends in tragedy
DEERFIELD BEACH, FL — Most people knew Michael J. Webb as the indispensable head janitor at LA Fitness, but Webb harbored a dark secret, one which cost him his life last Friday, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Webb, 56, was killed on November 2, after he was gunned down in a "blazingly cinematic" ending to what federal agents and police said was the jovial janitor's secret life — as one of South Florida's most prolific serial bank robbers, the article stated.
According to the article, the handyman, known as the go-to Mr. Fix It, stole tens of thousands of dollars by holding up banks within blocks of where he lived.
"To say we're shocked by this is an understatement," said Mike Smith, a co-worker at LA Fitness who lived with Webb in a house just a short walk from the gym.
Webb earned the trust of his co-workers, despite sharing a past that included jail time; he was given a security key that allowed him full access to the gym so he could begin his workday at 2 a.m., when he scrubbed the showers and wiped down the exercise machines, recently earning a promotion from lead janitor to facilities supervisor, the article noted.
"He was like an uncle who helped me manage this facility,” said Sean Lynch, the gym's general manager.
“So, when the FBI walked in, showed me his picture and told me he was dead, it hit me like a ton of bricks," Lynch added.
