Custodian pauses his crusade on dirt to fight terrorism in Afghanistan
AVON, CT — An assembly was held last week to honor an Avon Middle School custodian who will soon be deployed to Afghanistan, according to the Avon Patch.
Manny Rivera, a nighttime custodian who was warmly welcomed by the entire student body and members of various school staffs with chants of “USA! USA!”, is a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, the story stated.
Avon Middle School Principal Marco Famiglietti said, “As a school community, it's important that our kids see that one of our own staff members is being deployed into a war zone.”
The 700 individuals that make up the Avon Middle School community — 600 students and 100 staff members — plan to send periodic care packages to Rivera and his unit for the duration of their deployment, the story noted.
Rivera, who will leave for Fort Hood on October 12 for training before being sent overseas, graciously addressed the assembly, thanked them for their support and ended with a timeless one-liner, the story added.
“Like Arnold said, I’ll be back,” Rivera quipped.
