RIO RANCHO, NM — Although Jason Lucero was barely a man when he began working as a Rio Rancho Public Schools custodian, he already had very adult responsibilities, according to the Rio Rancho Journal.
At 19, Lucero already had a wife and child dependent on him, and sporadic work as a floor installer wasn't paying the bills, the article stated.
According to the article, through his mother-in-law he found work as a custodian at Rio Rancho Elementary; shortly thereafter, he transferred to Ernest Stapleton Elementary where the foreman had resigned and Lucero was asked to take the position, making him the youngest foreman at only 20 years old.
Lucero, now 36, was given a commendation for outstanding service by the board of education last Monday, in recognition of his impeccable work ethic, the article noted.
Lucero was nominated by Debra Almaraz as part of the district's Unsung Heroes initiative, the article added.
