Norovirus nips passengers on cruise ship
JUNEAU, AK — An outbreak of norovirus has been confirmed aboard a vessel owned and operated by Princess Cruises, according to the Maritime Reporter.
Roughly 114 of the Dawn Princess' 1,778 passengers have reported symptoms of the gastrointestinal illness that mimics flu-like effects, the story stated.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the ship's crew has increased cleaning and disinfecting procedures, notified passengers and quarantined ill individuals, the story noted.
According to the story, announcements have encouraged those onboard to report any possible cases and to practice proper hand hygiene, including frequent handwashing and avoiding hand to mouth contact.
An environmental health assessment is being conducted by CDC Vessel Sanitation Program officers to evaluate the outbreak and establish which steps are necessary to curb its spread and maintain the health of unaffected passengers, the story added.
